Long-term exposure to the weather can be deadly to many plastic materials. Weather resistance in plastics avoids turning plastics into brittle materials that yellow with age. With respect to most plastics, ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun is the major culprit. In time, it can cause the molecular structure of such materials to literally disintegrate. Weather resistant plastics are therefore required to counteract these effects. Other environmental factors, such as moisture and extreme temperatures, simply aggravate the problem. Long-term, continuous outdoor exposure of most unstabilized thermoplastics normally results in changes in color and other physical properties. These changes can usually be measured quantitatively as indicators of a material’s long-term weather resistance.
