PVC plastic

PVC is a flexible or rigid material that is composed of Polyvinyl chloride. Rigid PVC is easily machined, heat formed, welded, and even solvent cemented. PVC can also be easily machined using standard tools and finished to close tolerances. PVC is probably the most versatile of all the commodity polymers since it can be compounded with a variety of plasticisers and particulate fillers to achieve a broad range of properties. pvc is cheap, inherently flame-retardant, stiff and strong with good vapour barrier properties and uv resistance. It has limited solvent stress cracking resistance and embrittles at 5oC unless it is impact modified.

PVC continuous service temperature is around 50oC. PVC-C can be used at higher temperatures - upto 100 dgr. celsius. The pvc materials are also blow moulded into bottles for non-carbonated fluids. Lightly foamed extruded materials made by the Celuka process are found in building elements Lighly plasticised grades of PVC are used for cable coverings and gramophone records, while more heavily plasticised compounds of pvc (Plastisols) are used for waterproofing fabrics and for the manufacture of hollow articles by either slush moulding or rotational casting.

PVC plastic properties

PVC is stable in contact with inorganic chemicals, including aqueous alkalis and acids. It is unaffected by exposure to oils and alcohols but pvc is degraded by most polar aromatic hydrocarbons. Unplasticised grades (PVC-U) are used extensively (exclusively in some cases) for drainpipes, cold water pipes, guttering, and for window profiles.
