PTFE is an expensive material having outstanding chemical resistance, very low coefficient of friction and high continuous use temperature (180oC). PTFE material cannot be be melt processed and all artefacts are made by high temperature sintering. Sintered products are porous and have relatively low strength and stiffness. The porosity of ptfe means they cannot be used in corrosion sensitive. PTFE resists all known chemicals except alkali metals and halogens at elevated temperatures. It is swollen by fluorocarbons. PTFE is used for bearings, chemical vessel linings, pipe and valve linings, gaskets, diaphragms, piston rings, and in high temperature electrical insulation. Perhaps its most familiar application is in the non-stick coating on frying pans.

PTFE is one of the most thermally stable plastic material. There are no appreciable decompositions at 260°C, so that PTFE, at this temperature, still possesses the greater part of its properties. Appreciable decomposition begins at over 400°C. The arrangement of the PTFE molecules (crystalline structure) varies with the temperature. There are different transition points, with the most important ones being the following: at 19°C corresponding to a modification of some physical properties and that at 327°C which corresponds to the disappearance of the crystalline structure: the PTFE assumes an amorphous aspect conserving its own geometric form.
