Polyethylene terephthalate plastic is a hard, stiff, strong dimensionally stable material that absorbs very little water. It has good gas barrier properties and good chemical resistance except to alkalis (which hydrolyse it). Polyethylene terephthalate plastic crystallinity varies from amorphous to fairly high crystalline; it can be highly transparent and colorless but thicker sections are usually opaque and off-white. Polyethylene terephthalate plastic offers better toughness and electrical properties at the expense of reduced temperature performance (60oC max), increased creep and notch sensitivity. PBT mouldings are prone to warping due to the high differential shrinkage of the polyethylene terephthalate plastic material. For all these reasons, PBT is almost always used in the form of an injection mouldable compound containing glass fibres.
