CNC Machining - what is it?
CNC machining is used to produce components at Ryan Plastics. Ryan Plastics makes many of the components it produces by "CNC machining." CNC machining parts are sometimes also called "billet" parts because the parts are made by sculpting a form from solid chunks or billets of material. For example, the aluminum deck on a Xootr Street, Venus, or Slimline is made by CNC machining a solid slab of aluminum. CNC Machining refers to a manufacturing process by which material is removed by a cutting tool of some kind.
CNC Machining - How is it done?
Probably the most common CNC machining process is "milling." A milling machine incorporates a spinning cutting tool which typically looks something like a big fat drill bit, but with a blunt end instead of a point. (If you are a woodworker, think of a big router bit.) The CNC machining milling machine has a clamping system to hold a chunk of material in place and the spinning cutting tool is then moved through the material in order to create slots, cavities, or shaped edges. CNC Machining is a specialist job. Early milling machines were designed with hand cranks, CNC machining has developed enormously. CNC machining requires skill.
